About LifeIndex
Real data. Real life. An independent U.S. cost-of-living platform.
1. What Is LifeIndex?
LifeIndex is a free, independent data platform that compares cost of living, salaries, housing prices, rent, taxes, population and economic indicators across all 50 U.S. states and major cities. We do not sell data; we visualize it.
- No registration, no paywall, no user tracking for sale.
- All numbers link to their source API and cache timestamp.
- Built for movers, job seekers, renters, buyers, students and researchers.
2. Why We Built It
Government data is authoritative but scattered across Census, BLS, HUD, FRED and EIA — each with different APIs and vintages. We normalize, cache and rank it so a household earning $75k in Mississippi can fairly compare to California's $695k median home. See our Texas vs California example.
3. Data Sources & Methodology
| Source | Coverage | Update Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Census Bureau (ACS 5-Year) | Population, household income, home values, age & poverty | Annual |
| Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) | Wages by occupation, employment & inflation (CPI) | Monthly |
| HUD | Fair Market Rent by county & metro area | Annual |
| Federal Reserve (FRED) & Freddie Mac | Mortgage rates, GDP, Fed funds, Treasury yields | Weekly / Daily |
| U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) | Retail gasoline prices by region & grade | Weekly |
| NHTSA & CFPB | Vehicle data & credit-card terms | Annual / Semiannual |
- Automated pipelines fetch official APIs, validate and normalize results, and publish them with a visible source and last updated timestamp on every page.
- Vintage disclosure: Each figure shows its vintage (e.g., "Census ACS 2023", "HUD FMR 2025") so you know how current it is.
- Rankings are computed deterministically from median values; ties are broken alphabetically for consistency.
4. Editorial Independence
- No government affiliation — we are not the Census Bureau, BLS or HUD.
- Advertising never influences rankings or data; ad placements are managed separately.
- We follow FTC Endorsement Guides: any sponsored content will be clearly labeled.
- Corrections are published with timestamps; contact support@lifeindexdata.com.
5. How to Use LifeIndex
- Browse All 50 States or search a city.
- Compare two states: Texas vs California.
- Check Rent, Salaries, Taxes and Economy pages.
- Use Calculators and Rankings for decisions — then verify with professionals (see Disclaimer).
6. Funding & Ads
LifeIndex is free and, where advertising is enabled, funded by Google AdSense. Ads do not affect rankings or data. Any future sponsored or lead programs will be clearly disclosed. We do not sell personal data. See Privacy and Advertising Disclosure.
7. Limitations
We show medians and averages, not personal quotes. HUD FMR is a voucher benchmark, not market rent. Census ACS lags 12–18 months. Mortgage and gas prices move weekly. Always confirm before financial commitments. Details in Disclaimer §2–8.
8. Contact & Support
